Having surgery at Gateshead
We understand that the prospect of having surgery can be very daunting, whether it’s a same day procedure, or something requiring a more extensive hospital stay.
However, The Peter Smith Surgery Centre at QE Gateshead, with its highly-skilled and experienced professionals, provides first-class care and offers great peace of mind to all our patients.
What we offer
At QE Gateshead, we offer a range of surgical procedures, from joint and orthopaedic surgery, to gynaecological procedures and minor, day case surgery.
Day surgery covers everything from correcting small knee or shoulder injuries to having bunions removed.
Before you come in for your surgery, we will invite you to attend a pre-surgery assessment, which we hope will help to put you at ease, as it gives you peace of mind that you are fit for your procedure.
You may be asked to undergo cardio pulmonary exercise testing if we think your risks from surgery may be increased. This will help us ensure your surgery can go ahead safely.
You will find our staff to be kind, compassionate and reassuring every step of the way, whatever surgery you need to come in for.
After your surgery, we will ensure you have regular pain relief to help you recover as comfortably as possible and we will also advise you on everything you need to do to take care of yourself and recover well.
Any follow up care plan will also be sent to your GP surgery after your stay in hospital.
Our facilities
Our Peter Smith Surgery Centre was built to provide first-class care at a cost of £13.3m.
It has 60 inpatient beds, four operating theatres and a 16-patient day case space, so it can easily support and accommodate patients requiring all types of surgery.
The unit prides itself on its excellent facilities and the ability to create a positive patient experience and there is more information about the Peter Smith Surgery Centre on its dedicated page.
Waiting well service
Some patients under the care of our hospital may be contacted and offered support from the Waiting Well service.
‘Waiting Well’ is a service supporting patients who are waiting for planned surgery or treatment, such as knee and hip replacements.
Not all patients who are waiting for surgery will be offered support from the Waiting Well team as this is determined on the level of help that a patient may need. You cannot refer yourself to this service.
The Waiting Well service is a service provided by the NHS and there is no cost to you.
