If you have symptoms of vomiting and/or diarrhoea, please do not visit patients in hospital. There is currently an increase in the winter sickness bug (Norovirus), visiting when you have symptoms may spread the illness to hospital patients who are already vulnerable. Stroke Services

The stroke specialist team care for patients with acute stroke and are transferred to Gateshead if they need further inpatient care.

About the service

This department is jointly managed by Gateshead Health and Newcastle-upon-Tyne Hospitals Trust, as part of our joint stroke service.

Gateshead residents with acute stroke are initially assessed at Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle and then transferred to Queen Elizabeth Hospital if they need further inpatient care. On discharge to the community they will be supported by the Community Stroke Rehabilitation Team, who are based at Bensham Hospital.

The stroke specialist team includes therapists, nursing staff and doctors. Services provided by the stroke team include:

  • Care of patients with acute stroke, including those requiring inpatient stroke rehabilitation, on the Jubilee Acute Stroke and Rehabilitation Unit (JASRU). JASRU is located on the ground floor of Jubilee Wing.
  • Outpatient clinics to follow up patients who have recently suffered a stroke
  • Rapid-access clinics for patients with a suspected transient ischaemic attack (TIA)
  • Support for rehabilitation in the community, provided by the Community Stroke Rehabilitation team
