Planning your journey

Having a hospital appointment can be stressful enough without the worry of how to get here.

That’s why we provide directions to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital by car and information on how to plan your journey using public transport.

Once you are here, check our colour coded map of the hospital and its car parks in order to find your way around.

Directions to our hospital by car

From the A1

  • Exit the A1 at the Angel of the North junction (with the A167 and B1296)
  • Join the B1296 (Long Bank Road)
  • Continue for 1 mile and at the mini roundabout turn left.
  • At the next mini roundabout, turn right.
  • At the traffic lights, turn left onto the High Street, which runs into Old Durham Road.
  • Continue for 1 mile and turn right onto Queen Elizabeth Avenue (Ambulance station on right).
  • The Hospital’s main entrance is on the right-hand side

By Rail

  • Take the east coast main line service to Newcastle upon Tyne.
  • A frequent service on the Metro runs to Gateshead Interchange.

By coach or bus

  • Disembark at Gateshead Interchange.
  • Taxis are available outside the Interchange.
  • The hospital is served by a number of local buses from the town centre’s interchange.
  • For information for all local bus, metro and train services throughout the North East, call 0870 6082608. You can also visit the Nexus traveline North East.

Public transport

Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Bensham Hospital and Blaydon Urgent Treatment Centre are easy to access by public transport with regular bus services.

To help you plan your journey to hospital, visit the Nexus passenger transport website  where you will find travel details for all public transport including bus routes, Metro and local rail services.

Walking and cycling

The location of our sites is an ideal location to access by foot or bike for many visitors.

At Queen Elizabeth Hospital there are cycle hoops available opposite the Emergency Care Centre and outside Trust HQ for visitors to use so you can secure your bike safely whilst you visit.

Car Parking

Driving is the favoured option of choice for many to access the hospital site and therefore we’re constantly looking to improve our car parks to ensure that they are accessible to all. 

We also feel it is important that you as patients and visitors find a space near the appropriate entrance for your requirements.
